Monoeices is a person in two parts. In almost all uses, she is an ageless member of the Shadowless working to unwind Ahm's plan and bring Kona to an end. However, she is also a healer from the First Age, who was given the power of the Shadowless and her mask by Paramedes.

Monoeices was a healer and doctor in a village in the First Age, who saw the beginning of the calamity that would lead to the Xanthous and the end of the First Age. Her family and village fell ill, and she was unable to save them despite the help of Paramedes, himself acting as a healer.

After their deaths, she pledged herself to Paramedes's greater plan. She seems to maintain some belief that the souls of those she lost can still be saved.

Her mask was found in Diatonis, where she was masterminding a scheme to seal off the dragon's roost from the outside world. Breighlin Pickwielder retrieved the mask of Monoeices, and was afterwards able to communicate with her in dreams.

In these dreams, Monoeices has sorted through Breighlin's memories while the wizard asks her questions about Paramedes and the Shadowless. Monoeices always claims to never be attempting to manipulate Breighlin, and explains the Shadowless's aims as attempting to “free” the dead of the past from the burdens of the present and their own cruel fates.

It was only unwillingly that the nature of her split soul was revealed, with a persona more aligned with the First Age healer revealing itself as Breighlin extended sympathy.
